Lawyer Statistical Report
The American Bar Foundation has, since 1956, periodically
produced The Lawyer Statistical Report with the cooperation of Martindale Hubbell, which provides the data files for
this project. The latest edition provides extensive information on lawyers at the
national level, and by state, as of the year 2000. An introductory essay reports on the changing demographics of the legal
profession and trends over time in lawyer employment and in the number,
size, composition, and location of law firms.
This report is unique to
the literature about the profession in that it
- provides detailed demographic
information on the numbers of lawyers and law firms nationally and on a
state-by-state basis
- presents
distributions of lawyers across practice settings, among law firms of various
sizes, and practice settings by age and gender
Clara N. Carson, with the assistance of Research Fellow Emerita Barbara
A. Curran, is currently compiling a new edition of The Lawyer Statistical Report, which is an analysis of the 2005
national lawyers’ database.
